    Westwood pit was sunk 1915 by the Oakbank oil company to reach reserves of Dunnet shale 700 feet below the surface. There were two brick lined shafts, 16' in diameter. Shale was wound in No.1 (downcast) shaft, No.2 shaft being for ventilation, electric cables and water pipes.
