Started work at age 15 with Young's Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Company Ltd, and worked for Hopetoun Works and Mines, Broxburn Oil Company Ltd, Roman Camp Works and Mines, Pumpherston Oil Company Ltd and Pumpherston Works as an accountant.
