Description

Card notice outlining rules and instructions to tenants regarding the electric lighting of oil company houses from Broxburn Oil Company, c. 1910.

Homes were generally wired for lighting only with one further socket in the kitchen for small appliances. Additional sockets were available at extra cost, but the use of larger appliances like cookers or heaters was forbidden.

Shale oil companies pioneered the use of electricity in their works and mines. Many company villages were also fed from the works supply and the cost of this domestic power deducted from wages.
