Description

Cast iron bubble cap with serrated edge.

Used within cracking towers of oil refineries to "bubble" the various oil fractions in order to extract the required products i.e. naphtha, lubricating oil etc. by A.F. Craig & Co. Paisley. Winkler-Koch patent bubble caps for vacuum distillation, circa 1930

Collected from A F Craig's, Paisley, empty factory by Braithwaite, S. The bubble cap formed part of the Winkler-Koch patent vacuum distillation equipment, first introduced in the late 1920's The Paisley-based engineering firm of A.F. Craig & Co. had long associations with the Scottish shale oil industry and were involved in the establishment of the Pumpherston Oil Company. Craig's manufactured retorts and refinery plant for British and overseas customers and played an important role in introducing the inventions of the Scottish industry to an international market.
