S.S.P.C.A. certificate presented to Leslie Johnston, No.35 shale mine Threemiletown, 1939, for the inspection of pit ponies.
Large numbers of ponies were employed underground in shale mines, hauling hutches along the relatively spacious roadways. The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals inspected pit ponies each year and presented awards to their handlers for care and humane treatment.
