Description
B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.
Shale was mined by drilling a series of shot holes then inserting explosive charges. A upright prop or "tree" was jammed between the floor and the roof and the hand powered borer was then jammed between the shale face and the tree. This miner is wearing a cloth cap with a naked flame lamp - probably a tallow lamp - as he works. Probably one of a series of underground images taken at Westwood pit in 1929
