Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Pumpherston works refined the crude oil produced at the Deans, Seafield, Tarbrax and Pumpherston crude oil works of the Pumpherston Oil Company. After formation of Scottish Oils Ltd, Pumpherston refined all of crude oil produced by the Scottish shale oil industry. This view show a range of boiler stills used, in conjunction with coking stills, to split crude oil into its various fractions. Boiler stills were superseded by the introduction of fractionating towers in c. 1930.
