Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Crude oil was produced at Pumpherston works from c.1883 until 1925, when the local Pumpherston mines were exhausted. Refining of crude oil produced at other oil works continued at Pumpherston until closure of the industry in 1962. This view shows retorts (left), a bank of atmospheric condensers (centre) and left, what appears to be gas scrubbing towers. Railway sidings contain a selection of tank and mineral wagons (including Barr and Thornton coal wagon).
