Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

A view of Pumpherston oil works, c.1920. "Pumpherston" or "Bryson" design retorts with inclined staging for hauling hutches of shale to the tops of the retort and banks of pipes forming the atmospheric condenser. These cast iron pipes dissipated the heat of the vapour passing through them causing it to condense as crude oil or ammonia liquor.
