Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

The winding houses were where the controls for the pit elevators were housed. A large cable wound around an equally large drum allowed men and equipment to be lowered into the pit in cages by means of a large electric motor. This image shows the pit winder at work in the winding house. This particular winding engine is electrically powered, the volt and ampere gauges can be seen in front of the depth indicator. This is possibly Burngrange No.1 Pit.
