Description
B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.
Shale was cut with a mechanical cutter and delivered onto the shaker conveyor. This then transported the shale to the 'drawer' who then guided the lumps of oil shale into hutches for transport to the surface. This picture illustrates a miners drawer filling a hutch with freshly cut shale. This view also gives a good view of the miner's safety helmet (a cool cap) and the electric safety lamp mounted on the front.
