Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Candles and a range of wax products, were produced in great quantities by Young's company at Addiewell and the Broxburn company at Broxburn. This view, probably at Broxburn Candleworks, shows candles being produced in candle making frames. These machines had pewter candle moulds surrounded with a jacket which could be filled either with steam or cold water. Hot was would be poured into frames which had been heated with steam. The supply of cold water was then turned on to solidify the candles. A continuous wick was fed through the moulds from spools beneath.
