Description
Large galvanised oil barrel with Young's Oil Co. ownership plaques
With two plaques on one end that read 'Young's Oil Co Ltd, No. 87' and 'Young's Oil Coy Ltd, No. [the number has rusted away], Addiewell. There is a bung on the top and a pipe for a tap fitting on the end. Bought at an auction by the donor after the closure of business of the Old Philpstoun smithy. The item had been in the possession of the family who owned the smithy for decades, possible since they were new, the smithy being established in 1840s. The late blacksmith sold paraffin from the smithy in the mid 20th century. The donor grew up in the village and was very familiar with the items, particularly the barrel, as they were scattered through the smithy and the workshop.
