Britain's first Offshore oil-well: BP Exploration Co. commenced drilling an underwater well, two and a half miles offshore from Lulwoth Cove, Dorset. The first offshore oil well drilled in the coastal waters of Great Britain. The decision to drill at Lulwoth Banks was taken after several years investigation of the area involving submarine geology and marine geophysical work had confirmed the presence of potential oil bearing structure. The well is being drilled by a BP crew using a small land rig of 300 horse-power and an 87 foot mast mounted on a drilling barge. The barge which weighs 650 tons, has been specially designed for offshore drilling and has four retractable legs which rest on the sea bottom and raise the barge 30 feet above water when drilling is in progress. The depth of water on the Lulwoth Banks is around 60 feet and the well itself is expected to do down to 2,500 feet. The main target is the Bridport Sands, a geological formation which comes to the surface in the vicinity of Bridport.
