Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Westwood pit was sunk 1915 by the Oakbank oil company to reach reserves of Dunnet shale 700 feet below the surface. There were two brick lined shafts, 16' in diameter. Shale was wound in No.1 (downcast) shaft, No.2 shaft being for ventilation, electric cables and water pipes. This photograph shows the elevated staging around No.1, the upcast shaft.

One of a series of photos taken c.1929, see also LVSAV2019.149, LVSAV2019.151, LVSAV2019.152
