Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Westwood pit was sunk 1915 by the Oakbank oil company to reach reserves of Dunnet shale 700 feet below the surface. There were two brick lined shafts, 16' in diameter. Shale was wound in No.1 (downcast) shaft, No.2 shaft being for ventilation, electric cables and water pipes.

This staging around No.1 shaft housed the hutch roads for handling the output of the pit. After each hutch is weighed it is either emptied into the standard gauge railway wagons in the sidings below the staging, or else hauled up the incline on the right for storage on the bing. The buildings in the background are offices and workshops. One of several views of Westwood pit, taken in about 1929. See also LVSAV2019.130 LVSAV2019.151 and LVSAV2019.152
