code: LVSAV2017.053
Description
A collection of lantern slides documenting paraffin workers with a variety of skin cancers
A collection of 181 glass lantern slides which show the devastating effects of paraffin dermatosis on the bodies of shale oil workers. These images are believed to have been taken and recorded by Dr Alexander Scott who was employed by the Scottish Shale Oil Industry via an agreement with the Home Office (Factory division) to investigate the occurance and causes of paraffin dermatosis in shale oil workers. These were donated along with 113 glass plate negatives (LVSAV2017.052) and a handwritten notebook (LVSAV2017.054). Only a small number are previewed here, as many show graphic and intimate images of disease.
